Three PBIO faculty members, Eb Fetz, Adrienne Fairhall and Chet Moritz, have collaborated with local playwrights to produce short plays that examine the impact of neural enhancements on what it means to be human.
What does it mean to be human? Teams of five scientists and five local playwrights offer insights into that question in five short plays that examine the impact of prosthetics and neural enhancements on what it means to be human. Staged readings are followed by a scientist-led conversation, exploring the questions and issues raised by the plays.
This year’s Thought Experiments features five researchers from the Center for Sensorimotor Neural Engineering: Eberhard Fetz, Adrienne Fairhall, Lise Johnson, Chet Moritz and Howard Chizeck.
This year’s plays are:
- “Closed Loop” By Rose Cano Directed by Nikki Mejia
- “Brain Trust” By Rachel Atkins Directed by Dan Morris
- “Calibration” By Elizabeth Heffron Directed by Paul Budraitis

“Infinity Box’s Thought Experiments were a delight to watch. Witty, philosophical, moving and fun– the show faces forward and asks us what kind of future we want. I can’t wait to see what they come up with next!”
Allie Kerr, audience member, Thought Experiments, 2013.
