Remembering Professor Jacob (Jack) Hildebrandt (September 21, 1930 – January 5, 2025)

Professor Jacob (Jack) Hildebrandt passed away peacefully with his loving wife Shirley Lampkin by his side. Born in Enfield, Saskatchewan, Canada, he earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in Physics and Chemistry and a Master’s degree in Biophysics from the University of British Columbia. After receiving his PhD in Physiology & Biophysics from the University of Washington School of Medicine in 1966, Professor Hildebrandt accepted a position as Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiology at West Virginia University.

In 1967, he returned to Seattle to serve as a Research Investigator at Virginia Mason Research Center. In 1969, Professor Hildebrandt joined the University of Washington as an affiliate professor in the Department of Physiology & Biophysics. In 1983, he was appointed Professor in the Department of Physiology & Biophysics and held concurrent appointments in the Departments of Medicine (Pulmonary and Critical Care), Surgery, and Pediatrics. He retired from the Department of Physiology & Biophysics in 2022.

Throughout his distinguished career spanning nearly six decades, Professor Hildebrandt mentored countless PhD candidates, sharing his profound love of science with students who continued to seek his guidance long after graduation. His influence shaped many careers, and his research contributions continue to impact scientists worldwide. Per Jack’s wishes, no service will be held. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
