At the Commencement Ceremony on May 26, 2019, Sharona Gordon, University of Washington School of Medicine Professor of Physiology and Biophysics, was awarded Brown University’s Horace Mann Medal. The Horace Mann Medal is awarded annually to a distinguished graduate alumna or alumnus to recognize their significant contributions to their field. With Professor Gordon’s contributions to the field of ion channel physiology, leadership as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of General Physiology, service on numerous NIH and professional society committees, and efforts to promote equity for women in science, most recently through founding of Below the Waterline, she “embodies the qualities symbolized by this award: academic achievement, leadership and a dedication to students, colleagues, community and profession.” More information on Professor Gordon’s accomplishments and the Horace Mann Medal can be found at https://www.brown.edu/academics/gradschool/about/awards/horace-mann-medal.
