A medical device to restore hand function in people with severe spinal cord injuries has received FDA approval following successful testing at UW Medicine. The groundbreaking technology, which utilizes transcutaneous electrical spinal cord stimulation, was tested by a team of experts led by Dr. Chet Moritz, who holds joint professorships in Neurobiology & Biophysics, Rehabilitation Medicine, and Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Washington. According to KUOW/NPR, UW Medicine has made history as the first hospital system worldwide to acquire the device, marking a significant advancement in spinal cord injury treatment. The NBIO community is thrilled for Dr. Moritz’s achievement and eagerly anticipates the future possibilities this milestone represents for neurotechnology and translational medicine, as it opens new doors for innovative therapeutic approaches in patient care.
